It was 38 years ago... ... when I left School (and Cambridge) and went to University. Apart from a few weeks of occasional holiday I haven't lived in Cambridge since then until the beginning of July this year when I started a new job.
Earlier this year when in the area I thought it would be good to try and catch up with some old friends. After a bit of searching and a few Emails I met up with three of my old school friends last night in a pub (where else) and we spent some time chatting and drinking beer. It was good to find out what had been going on and to hear about other mutual friends. Someone even mentioned the dreaded "reunion" word, but I think that might take a few more pub visits to get organised.

Still about, honest I've been a bit absent recently. This is mostly because I've started a new job and as a result I'm living in Cambridge during the week. The new job is going well, although I've got a rather steep learning curve while I get used to all the new things. Hopefully I'll have some permanant accomodation in Cambridge soon too.
Just to keep me on my toes, Monday was the Uni graduation of L my youngest daughter, this involved a trip to Yorkshire to watch her offical graduation where she got to shake hands with Patrick Stewart who is Chancellor of Huddersfield University. There will be photos once I reclaim my camera from her.

BarronBrady at the Willows Folk Club Last night was the Willows and the guests were BarronBrady, a duo from Dorset in the West Country.
Some very good guitar playing from Si Barron and some interesting Harmonium and whistle playing from Rosalind Brady. Both sing producing some lovely harmonies.
They have a web site at barronbrady.com and a myspace page at BarronBrady with several songs available.
They seem to tour quite a bit and will be at several festivals this summer, well worth seeing if they are going to be near you.

April Snow This morning it was raining...
Then at about 9am the rain suddenly turned to snow and the temperature plummeted to zero.
By 11am the back garden looked like this!

Friday Evening at Lopping Hall Friday evening was another in the series of Charity gigs for Playing Rapunzel at The Lopping Hall in Loughton.
callylevy and I had arranged to have lunch together and followed that by an afternoon of talking and me listening to her playing piano. Once little_cinnamon arrived home from work they did a quick run through of a few songs which was such a hardship to listen to ;) Then djbp arrived and after more tea we loaded the rest of the kit in the car and headed to Loughton.
With djbp helping, the unloading and rigging went quickly and Russ (the sound guy) and I discussed who would be doing what and when. The first half of the gig was relaxed, mostly listening to some very good music and me running the desk while Russ did his set, he was going to apologise for the variety of instruments he played including banjo but I said not to worry, if I can manage a Bluegrass band and PR then a solo performer is no problem.
PR were on last, we did a quick stage reset a very minimal recheck on the sound and they were off. They had their usual effect on the audience, rapt attention to their songs interspersed with loud applause. They didn't need much persuading to do an encore and the MC asked them back on stage to do a second one, it's a good job they have a big repertoire! The set list was:
Tanglewood Tree Joan/Sovay One Big Sea Now and Here Thousand Ships Unpronounceable (and unspellable) Greek Song River (as an encore) Lies (as a second encore)
A very enjoyable evening indeed which was enjoyed by all. The inevitable little voice from the back of the car on the way home "I'm sooooo hungry" made us all decide to order in Chinese food and we wound down chatting and eating before crashing.

Flossie Malavialle ... ... was at the Willows Folk Club last night.
She is a French schoolteacher (of English) who came to England 6 years ago on a one year teaching exchange to improve her English. Unfortunately the exchange was in Darlington! She now speaks English with a strong North Eastern accent.
Fortunately for us however, while she was there she discovered English Folk Clubs and gave up full time teaching to become a Folk singer. Six years and six CDs later (yes, one a year!) she is making quite a name for herself!
Singing everything from Edith Piaf to Janice Joplin she has a very "big" stage presence and holds and entertains her audience with her fantastic voice both while singing and while delivering her unique "patter" between songs.
She has an interesting web site which includes sound samples from her CDs.

Addicted to Folk Clubs? It seems I might be... in the past 11 days I've been to:
Washington Music Club, to listen to Phil Green
The Woodies, to listen to Tangle
The Willows, to listen to Emily Smith
Horsham Folk Club, to listen to Playing Rapunzel and Julie Roberts and Gary Holder
The White Horse Folk Club, to listen to Greg Harper
I could also go to the Amberly Club tonight and there will be the Willows again on Wednesday...

7 Quirks So I can blame this on oreouk
a. List seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself. b. Tag seven people to do the same. c. Do not tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag "whoever wants to do it".
1) I can ride a motorcycle, drive a tank, fly a plane and con a submarine.
2) I used to play Clarinet and saxophone until my front upper tooth was damaged in an accident at a Church youth group party.
3) I appear to have this habit of accumulating daughters, I'm up to five now I think.
4) My wristwatch is of the tick-tock self winding variety.
5) I'm a radio Ham, callsign G8TMV
6) I've been to the USA many times, twice just to attend New Years Eve Parties.
7) I'm a harmony slut, if 2 or more people start singing I'll usually stop what I'm doing to listen.

WIDTW Saturday started out lazy, did mostly nothing until lunchtime except catch up on LJ and Email.
After lunch I headed northwards at a leisurely pace, my final destination being North London. On the way I stopped off at a Geocache near Gatwick to drop off a Travel Bug that was heading for Australia. Then on to another cache near Westerham, some very good views of the Sussex and Kent weald from several locations as I wandered along some quite narrow country lanes. Unfortunately it was just a little too misty for good photographs of the rather nice sunset. Having dropped off another TB I then headed for the M25 and my actual destination for the evening.
Just after 7pm saw me turning off the North Circular at the Crocked Billet Roundabout and into the car park at my destination. CESP were having a "Have a Go" night to raise some funds for their upcoming production of Ruddygore. Spent an interesting evening in the company of highstone, little_cinnamon and callylevy all of whom performed during the evening. The girls really doing a very good job in their role as Playing Rapunzel. The offerings presented during the evening ranged from a comedy radio play to excerpts from The Magic Flute.
Sunday morning saw me headed home and into the delays on the M23 caused by an errant escaped duvet. Managed to get home just in time for a lunch of roast lamb with the usual trimmings followed by a leisurely afternoon and evening.
The only downside to the weekend being the recurrent headache/muzzyness caused by inflamed sinuses left over from the con-crud picked up the weekend before.

Canal walk I went for a walk along part of the restored Wey and Arun canal this afternoon. Partly to do a couple of geocaches and partly to take a look at the engineering work taking place in Loxwood where the bridge that carries the main road through the village is being rebuilt to allow the canal to pass under it.

Work complete! Well, that didn't take long. Less than 3 days including installing and removing the scaffolding.
The noise continues as they work on removing the remainder from the inside of next door.

Scaffolding complete We have two chimney stacks, one of which we don't use because it doesn't exist inside our house anymore. But next door used it until very recently since it's on the party wall and is shared (two flues each).
So, since a) it needs some maint work and b) next door would like to reclaim the space it takes up in their kitchen we are having it removed. The scafolders turned up this morning.
